Industry studies consistently attribute the majority of premature bearing failures to lubrication problems rather than to the bearing itself. The encouraging part is that all four root causes are cheap to fix — they are habits, not capital projects.
1. The wrong grease
Plants accumulate greases. Someone buys a general-purpose lithium complex, someone else brings in a high-temperature product, and within a couple of years nobody is certain what's in which gun. Mixing incompatible thickeners can destroy a grease's structure entirely, leaving a bearing effectively dry.
Fix: one documented grease per asset, colour-coded guns, and a short written lubrication schedule that lives next to the store.
2. The wrong volume
Over-greasing is as damaging as under-greasing. Excess grease churns, generates heat, degrades and can push out seals. Under-greasing starves the contact and produces metal-to-metal wear.
Fix: calculate the correct volume from bearing geometry and apply it with a metered gun rather than 'a few pumps until it feels right'.
3. Contamination at the point of entry
A dirty grease nipple injects abrasive contamination straight into the bearing raceway. It is the fastest way to ruin a healthy bearing, and it takes ten seconds to prevent.
Fix: wipe every fitting before connecting, cap unused nipples, and keep grease containers sealed and off the floor.
4. Inconsistent intervals
Lubrication is the first task dropped when a breakdown swallows the day. Missed months are invisible until a bearing runs hot.
Fix: attach lubrication to a scheduled route that happens whether or not the plant is busy — which is precisely why we offer it as an optional add-on to the same vibration data collection visit.
The feedback loop that closes it
Ultrasonic and high-frequency vibration measurement can confirm whether a lubrication event actually helped. Grease, remeasure, and you know within minutes whether the bearing responded. That loop turns lubrication from a chore into a controlled process.
